New CRT glass storage requirements lead to problems for recyclers

19 JANUARY 2012

The Environment Agency has introduced new requirements for the storage of broken CRT glass to ensure that it is handled safely and does not pose a threat to human health or the environment.

Treatment sites were first informed about the new requirements early last year, but it would seem that there have been commercial practicalities that have lead to difficulties in implementation that have now seen one of only two CRT recycling sites with end-of-waste status for CRT glass to consider insolvency. Other recycling companies have also been critical of the new standards, claiming them to actually have adverse environmental effects.
