Government issues consultation on a plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds ban

24 OCTOBER 2018

The Government has issued a consultation on the banning of certain single use plastics that are considered to be particularly problematic as marine and land litter. The consultation closes on 22 December.

With a single use plastic tax expected to be announced in next week's budget and consultations on producer responsibility and deposit return due in early December, it is surprising they have chosen to consult separately on this narrow band of items. But it supposedly responds to public demand, so it will be interesting to see the level of response. The single use plastic tax consultation earlier this year attracted some 150,000 responses, the most ever for a public consultation.
