HSE to carry out spot checks on waste industry facilities

04 OCTOBER 2018

Statistics show the waste industry to be one of the most dangerous workplaces in the UK. Getting a Permit and operating under the Permitting system has become much more onerous but the EA does not have a role in assessing the safety of operatives on site and the operating methods employed by waste companies. This falls to HSE.

There are regular prosecutions of waste companies by HSE for unsafe practices and the waste industry itself has taken huge strides in developing safe practices. But not all companies work to these practices and HSE has now warned the waste industry that this week, they will be starting 'a programme of proactive unannounced inspections that will review health and safety standards in waste and recycling businesses across the country'.
