National Infrastructure Commission publishes plan of action over 10-30 years

11 JULY 2018

The National Infrastructure Commission has published a major new report on recommendations for UK infrastructure requirements for the next 10 - 30 years.

As well has covering transport, digital highway, flood defences and renewables the report proposes four key recommendations:for improving the UK's waste management performance:

  • Targets should be set to recycle 65% of all waste and 75% of plastic packaging by 2030.
  • There should be a standard clear labelling system on packaging - recyclable or not recyclable.
  • Hard to recycle plastics should have government imposed restrictions on use by 2025.
  • Separate food waste collections for all households and business should be established by 2025.

The report is wide ranging, comprehensive and pragmatic, working on the basis of affordability and pracicality. It will be interesting to look back in 2030 and see how much notice gets taken of their recommendations.
