HMRC Email received 21 March 2022

Good afternoon,

In just 10 days, on 1 April 2022, the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) comes into force. To help you understand whether you are liable, and if so, how to prepare for the tax, HMRC is running further webinar sessions to assist with any remaining questions you may have. These sessions take place tomorrow (Tuesday 22 March) and later this week (Thursday 24 March).

This email provides you with all the latest information and useful links support your preparations.

Useful information ahead of 1 April 2022

  • Manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging should visit GOV.UK and work through the 8 steps listed, to determine whether they need to register for the tax.
  • Businesses will have 30 days to register for the tax from the date they become liable. The registration portal link will be added to GOV.UK when the tax launches.
  • No business will need to file a PPT return until July 2022 at the earliest, however they may need to register before this time.
  • Those importing plastic packaging will need to check who is responsible for complying with and paying PPT.
