Kent EA road check operation leads to waste carriers/transfer notes prosecutions

24 AUGUST 2010

Back in March, the Kent EA and police carried our a road check operation on a road leading to an industrial estate to identify unauthorised waste carriers. Two people have now been convicted of carrying waste without a waste carriers licence.

In both cases, the 'white van man' culprits were given a chance to get registered, but subsequent checks revealed that they had continued to operate.

The first case saw a £1000 fine and costs of £800 for a man who was carrying textiles with no WCL or transfer note. The textiles had, he said, been collected from a hospital.

The second case concerned a man carrying scrap metal, household radiators and pipes which he said had come from his garage. Subsequent checks revealed he must have had a large house as there were several records of deposits by 'Nick94' at a local scrappie. Although then given the chance to register for a WCL, he failed to do so and was convicted with a £200 fine and £150 costs. Probably the value of one van load.

Whilst not exactly earth shattering, the prosecutions do show the EA's spot check activities.
