Q2 data shows surprisingly strong plastic recycling figures

26 JULY 2017

The Q2 packaging recycling data has been published (22 July) with a surpringly high plastics figure. Recent issues with exports to China had led the market to believe that the export figure would drag down the total, but not only was that figure higher than expected, but the UK reprocessing figure jumped to the highest quarterly level on record.

The table below shows the impact this has had with the plastics recycling level now at nearly 54% of the total required for the year. This means that only an average 218k tonnes of plastics recycling is now needed to meet the 2017 obligation.

Apart from glass, all the other materials performed strongly. Glass, however, is still in a weak position but traditionally, Q3 has been strong and should ease any potential problems.
