Digital Waste Tracking is being introduced in stages across the UK under separate legislation for each nation.

Stage 1 is the requirement for all permitted waste facilities (other that HWRCs for household deivered waste) to only provide details of all waste received. This includes:

  • Details of the carrier delivering the waste
  • Details of the broker if involved
  • If hazardous:
    • Consignment note number
    • Hazard property
    • If POPs, a description of the POP
    • Description of the waste including the weight and EWC code

Each site has to pay a £26 fee per site due ‘on the first occasion the obligation to comply with the specified steps under regulation 4(4) arises and then on each anniversary of that occasion.’

To date (27 April 2026), regulations have been laid by all but Northern Ireland:

Further stages of the system are due to become mandatory in Oct 2027 including the collection of waste and permitted site outputs.

It is not known when the system will be applied to Exemption sites or when it will replace waste transfer notes.
